Crafted to Last a Lifetime

In its raw state, zirconium is a bright silver-grey metal. But when we take this 16mm CNC-machined die and bake it in a high-temperature oxygen furnace at over 600 °C, something wild happens: the metal reacts and grows a midnight-black ceramic oxide skin directly from its own surface. This isn't paint, plating, or a cheap coating that will flake off—it is a diamond-hard ceramic layer fused into the metal itself. You get the exact same "Goldilocks" ~27-gram rolling weight as pure zirconium, but wrapped in a stealthy, scratch-resistant matte-black finish.

How We Turn Metal Into Ceramic (The Craftsmanship Story)

Natural zirconium is silver. To turn it black, we don't use spray paint or electroplating. After each die is CNC-machined from a solid billet, it goes through a controlled thermal oxidation process at extreme temperatures. The surface of the zirconium literally consumes oxygen and transforms into zirconium dioxide—an ultra-hard ceramic layer between 3 and 5 micrometers thick. Because the black layer grows out of the metal rather than sitting on top of it, it will never peel, flake, or delaminate.

Care Instructions (And Why It Doesn't Need Much)
  • Do NOT use abrasive metal polishes: Because the black finish is a ceramic oxide skin, using polishing compounds, wire brushes, or sandpaper can strip the oxide layer off and expose the silver zirconium underneath!
  • Safe from everyday drops: The surface is Mohs 8–8.5 (harder than quartz), meaning normal table rolls won't scratch it.
  • Clean with soap and water: A simple dry microfiber cloth or a drop of dish soap is all it ever needs to keep its dark, stealthy sheen.
Why Black Zirconium?

Most "black metal" dice on the market are just brass or steel sprayed with a cheap black paint that chips the second two dice bump into each other. Black Zirconium is entirely different. By forcing the metal to grow its own ceramic armor, you get an unmistakable midnight-black aesthetic with a silky, low-friction feel in the hand—all while keeping that satisfying ~27-gram medium weight that makes it a dream to roll.
